Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dental, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physical Therapy and Pre-Veterinary are professional programs, not majors. Students interested in the health professions may major in any field but most choose to concentrate their study in biology or chemistry.

A liberal arts education provides the general background which professional schools expect. Furthermore, a broad understanding of modern science and a variety of courses in the social sciences and humanities are important to students seeking admission to professional schools. Selection is very competitive; successful applicants maintain a high level of academic performance in all work and score well on the appropriate aptitude tests (MCAT, DAT, etc.).

What is the Pre-Medicine Program?

At Thiel, a student may choose any major. The minimum courses required for most medical schools include one year of biology, physics and English, and two years of chemistry (through Organic Chemistry). The American Medical Association recommends a BS or BA college degree, usually with a strong emphasis on basic sciences, such as biology, chemistry and physics.

While at Thiel, students have opportunities to shadow physicians and to engage in independent research projects on medical topics. Students are also assisted in obtaining summer research internships, particularly during the summer between junior and senior years.

Where do students go after Thiel?

Students are prepared to enter any school of medicine or osteopathy in the country. Recent graduates are attending West Virginia School of Medicine and Ohio University School of Osteopathic Medicine.
