GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College is hostingRichard Mitchell’s collection “The Vaudeville Team of Jesse Block & Eva Sully: A Photographic Family Album” through Dec. 7 in the Weyers-Sampson Gallery of the Howard Miller Student Center.
Documented by professional photographers throughout their career, this exhibition represents a look at Block and Sully as a working couple in an entertainment industry that was evolving from vaudeville to movies, radio, and eventually television. Mitchell is a retired professor at Youngstown State University. He led the school’s art department and founded its photography program.
As a family of entertainers, vaudevillians paved the way for the entertainment industry. The bonds of that industry are characterized in the exhibition by inscribed photographs from their fellow performers throughout their career.
The showing is free and open to the public.
“The exhibition tells such a great story of a husband and wife comedy team, revealing a view of life in the entertainment world from the 20s through the late 50s.” Professor of Painting and Curator of Art Sean McConnor said. “These photographs are important in documenting and remembering a significant art form in America.”
