Professor publishes reviews covering wide variety of topics for three journals

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College James Pedas Professor of Media, Communication and Public Relations Dane S. Claussen, Ph.D., published four book reviews in three leading communication journals leading up to and throughout the fall 2017 semester.

Claussen, who is Chair of the Department of Media, Communication and Public Relations and Executive Director of the James Pedas Communication Center, had his review of “The International History of Communication Study” published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly in the Winter 2017 edition. During in the fall semester, he also had his review of “Digital Badges in Education: Trends, Issues and Cases” in the Autumn 2017 edition of Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, the oldest and largest scholarly journal devoted to journalism and public relations education.

Claussen had reviews published in Journalism History and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly in summer 2017.

For his review in Journalism History, he looked at Steven Avella’s book “Charles K. McClatchy and the Golden Era of American Journalism.” He critiqued Andrew’s Pettegree’s “Brand Luther: How an Unheralded Monk Turned his Small Town Into a Center of Publishing, Made Himself the Most Famous Man in Europe—and Started the Protestant Reformation” for Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly.

Claussen is the former publisher and editor of daily, weekly, biweekly and monthly newspapers in Wisconsin, Oregon and Washington state. A former newspaper management consultant and media mergers/acquisitions broker, he has taught media management courses regularly for 15 years and conducted academic research on media management. Claussen is the former head of the Media Management, Economics & Entrepreneurship Division for the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication.

In addition to his doctorate in mass communication from the University of Georgia, his graduate work includes an M.B.A. in corporate finance and labor relations/human resources from the University of Chicago and an M.S. in mass communications from Kansas State University. He holds a B.S. in journalism from the University of Oregon. Claussen received the Pedas Endowed Chair in Communication at Thiel, a leading liberal arts college in northwest Pennsylvania, in 2015 and was recently appointed as editor of the Newspaper Research Journal.
