GREENVILLE, Pa.—Robin Sakonyi begins as the new director of the Thiel Learning Commons on Monday, November 2.
She comes to Thiel College from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, where she served as the Assistant Director for Student Tutorial Services and Supplemental Instruction and as the Associate Director for the Center for Student Progress.
“We look forward to Robin’s addition to the Thiel Learning Commons,” Associate Academic Dean for Student Success Greg Q. Butcher, Ph.D. said. “The Learning Commons is a vital resource for our students. The Thiel Learning Commons provides a variety of proactive and innovative programs designed to supplement the student’s academic experience.”
TLC promotes collaborative learning opportunities to enable students to build on their strengths and maximize their potential for academic success.
As the TLC director, Sakonyi will oversee programs within the department to promote collaborative learning opportunities that encourage academic success for individual students. Academic coaching, peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, organized study groups, and the writing lab are a few of the activities and programs available to students in the TLC.
In 2002, Sakonyi earned her Master of Arts in student personnel at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1996 with her Bachelor of Arts in film studies and psychology minor from the University of Pittsburgh.
Having worked for years in higher education, Sakonyi will bring to the College extensive experience in working closely with students to support their academic success. During her career, she has been a member of the education department at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pa., working as an assistant chair and an academic advisor. She was also a career counselor and a graduate assistant at Slippery Rock University.
