Emeritus Professor of Business David Miller recognized by former President Bush

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Emeritus Professor of Business and Norman P. Mortensen Endowed Chair of Economics David Miller '61, H'20 and his wife, Ruth H'20, returned to campus Friday to receive a personal letter from former President George W. Bush in recognition of Miller's 57 years of teaching at Thiel College.

Miller retired this spring. He began teaching at Thiel College in 1963. He has taught and advised more students than any professor in Thiel College’s 155-year history.

He was also the Executive Director of the Haller Enterprise Institute and led the Arthur McGonigal Depart of Business Administration and Accounting’s collaboration with the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He was recently named the 2020 Thiel College Professor of the Year and served as inspiration for the David Miller ’61 Endowed Chair of Accounting. 

Dear David:

I recently learned some wonderful things about you. Congratulations on your retirement from Thiel College after 57 years of dedicated service.

America’s young people rely on our educators for the knowledge and guidance they need to succeed in school and life. By helping prepare our next generation of leaders for the challenges and opportunities ahead, committed teachers play a vital role in the future of our country.

As you celebrate your career and accomplishments with your family, friends, and colleagues, I applaud your dedication to shaping the minds and hopes of our youth. Your hard work and service to your community reflect the spirit of America.

Miller graduated from Thiel College in 1961. His two children, Michael ’92 and Joy ’90, are also graduates of Thiel College. David and Ruth Miller were each awarded honorary doctoral degrees during the Collge’s Academic Honors Convocation in February 2020.
