GREENVILLE, Pa.—Artist Christopher Ryan will open his exhibition “Lucid Moments & Liminal Spaces” at Thiel College with a gallery talk at 3 p.m. February 23, 2017 in the Howard Miller Student Center.

Ryan’s exhibit will be on display in the Weyers-Sampson Gallery from Feb. 23-March 31. The collection features a selection of paintings and drawings of landscapes spanning roughly seven years from locations in Tuscany and Umbria, Italy; Brittany, France; and rural and suburban Ohio. Stemming from an appreciation of French and Italian “plein air” painting, the exhibition traces something of a progression from smaller studio pieces to more recent work exploring the liminal quality of dilapidated structures and other transitional spaces.

“Christopher Ryan’s landscapes paintings are notable for their quality of light, space and mark making,” said Professor of Painting and Curator of Art Sean McConnor. “Beyond their surface, Ryan’s paintings capture a quiet and enduring sense of place that follows a tradition in Italian and French painting of the mid to late 19th century.”

The gallery is free and open to the public. Hours for the spring semester are 11 a.m.-noon and 1-6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The gallery is open from 9 a.m.-noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with extra hours from 1-6 p.m. on Thursdays. On Fridays, the gallery is open from 11-noon and 1-2 p.m., or by appointment.

Ryan is an associate professor of art at Hiram College and has taught painting, drawing and other art subjects in Italy through programs with the University of Georgia and Studio Art Centers International. He has presented more than 40 exhibitions across the United States and in Florence, Italy.
