Assistant Professor of Chemistry

The Thiel College Department of Chemistry seeks an energetic faculty member for an open rank tenure-track position in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry to commence in August 2022.

The primary teaching responsibilities will involve the two-semester sequences of courses in organic chemistry and biochemistry (including laboratories), with a teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester.  Chemistry faculty are expected to supervise independent research projects of chemistry majors, and there will be opportunities to teach advanced topics courses, courses for nonmajors, as well as courses in the honors program.  The organic chemistry sequence is taken by chemistry majors and students interested in careers in the health professions, including those enrolled in the five-year accelerated physicians assistant masters degree program at Thiel College.  In addition to teaching, tenure track faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant life of the college, which includes, but is not limited to, advising and mentoring students majoring in chemistry and biochemistry, serving on committees, participating in recruitment efforts and convocations, contributing to the development and assessment of the program and department, and of course exhibiting growth and professional development.

This is an exciting time to join the chemistry department at Thiel College, as the institution has just completed significant renovations of its teaching spaces and laboratories.  Our program is equipped with a 60 MHz permanent magnet FT-NMR, modern UV-Vis and ATR-FTIR spectrometers, GC, HPLC, GC-MS, apparatus for cyclic voltammetry, and a recently acquired scanning electron microscope, all of which are housed in beautifully renovated lab spaces.  We enthusiastically seek a colleague who embraces undergraduate teaching and will help us continue to deliver an engaging chemistry program to a range of learners including non-science majors and students interested in the health sciences and nutrition.  Thiel chemistry majors and minors seek admission to medical professional schools and pursue graduate study in chemistry and biochemistry, as well as secure rewarding positions in the chemical industries in the region.

A dedicated passion for helping students reach their full potential in a supportive and inclusive learning environment is essential to this position.  Responsibilities include teaching, advising, service to the department and institution, student supervision, and professional development.  Thiel College gives highest priority to teaching effectiveness and the faculty are expected to remain current in the field through professional development opportunities such as attendance at related conferences, research, or other scholarly activities. A comprehensive employee benefit package including research support and a sabbatical program is provided.

Candidates for this position should have completed a PhD in organic chemistry or biochemistry.  Post-doctoral experience is not required but would be favorably considered.  Experience in teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduates is particularly desirable.  To apply for the position, please submit the following documents: (i) a cover letter expressing interest in the position; (ii) a curriculum vitae; (iii) transcripts for all degrees earned; (iv) a statement of teaching philosophy; (v) a statement of research interests particularly suitable for an undergraduate institution.   Unofficial copies of transcripts are suitable for the initial application; official copies of transcripts will be requested from those invited for interviews.  The candidates should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent separately.  All application materials should be submitted by clicking here [items (i) through (v) above can be assembled into a single pdf], or printed copies may be sent to the following address:  Organic Chemistry Search Committee, Attn: Jennifer Clark (Director of Human Resources), Thiel College, 75 College Ave, Greenville, PA 16125.

In order to receive full consideration, application materials should be submitted by February 15, 2022
