King prepares students for job hunting success

Mr. C. William King, president & CEO of Essential Research, Inc. spoke to students via Zoom at the Jan. 26 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar about how to prepare for success in searching for job and career opportunities after graduation.  Bill’s presentation covered topics such as resume writing, networking, LinkedIn, preparing an effective elevator speech, and interviewing tips.

“He taught us the ‘Art of the Elevator Speech’, which is a short speech that is an advertisement for yourself that you need to practice until it becomes something you can deliver without even thinking about it.” Angela Sorg ’23

“One of the first things we covered was how to network. Mr. King stressed the importance of creating a LinkedIn profile and networking with alumni, previous coworkers, parents, and professors who might be able to help create an opportunity for you. We then took a couple of minutes to practice giving our elevator speeches with a neighbor so that we would be prepared to use it in a real-world scenario.” Trey Williams ’22

“Using LinkedIn is very important, and Bill stated it is never too early to start networking. Some people you should connect with are your alumni, professors, and parents. When you think about networking a lot of people don’t think of their parents, but they know a lot of people and it could help you with finding a job; it’s okay to ask your parents.” Emily Sears ’22

“Bill provided us with step-by-step instruction and the dos and don’ts when practicing for an interview. The entire presentation was abundantly informative and allowed us to obtain a vast new understanding and knowledge on professional job hunting tactics.” Abigail Cico ’22

“Throughout his presentation he would continue bringing up the importance of being “the Tylenol to a company’s pain.” Once he got to the end of his presentation, he left us with the analogy comparing a job search and life to the Wizard of Oz. I am looking forward to using the information that Mr. King presented to find a job and have a successful career.” Richard Crooks ’22

“I learned that networking really is so much of finding a job, I have seen how useful networking can be especially with the connections made at Thiel. Networking is crucial to getting the job that you want, branching out and putting yourself out there is what’s beneficial to job hunting.” Madeline DePalma ’22

“Some things that stuck out to me were having good emotional support during the job-hunting process, how you can make meaningful connections, and how to use those connections to benefit you. These concepts stuck out to me because I have never really thought about that before.” Brycen Dorfmeister ’22

“Firstly, Bill began to explain that the biggest thing you can do is network! He says that the more connections and leads you have, you are better off in today’s job market. Next, we heard that finding a job should consist of blending your mission, passion, profession, and vocation to find your purpose.” John Ganiear ’22

“I’m very grateful to have learned these tips and techniques and I will be applying them over the next few months to aid in my job search. There were things in the presentation that I never even thought about, such as the layout of your resume and how to network in a way that could facilitate potential job opportunities. In conclusion, this presentation alone has taught me more about job searching and the hiring process than any other class.” Logan Long ’22

“Network, network, network. It is important to put yourself out there on as many professional platforms as possible.” Maddison Neely ’22

“In conclusion, Bill King did a great job on explaining the Guerilla Marketing presentation.  I learned a lot from this presentation and am looking forward to implementing these tips into my own business when it comes to interviewing.” John Retton ’22

“Ideally find a job that involves something you love, are good at, the world needs, and get paid for.” Owen Sa ’22

“He also said that our resume isn’t a job description, but it’s a marketing brochure. This can be done by using words associated with the position we’re interested in, mentioning transferrable skills, not having words cluttered, use fonts that are comfortable to read, and more.” Adonis Scriven ’22

Morgan Bodnar talked to our table about the graduate programs at Thiel and all of the benefits of them. Morgan and I also had a good conversation about networking, she told me to come and see her if I had an interest in working in higher ed because she has connections she could share with me. This was a perfect conversation that fit with the theme of the night.” Emily Sears ’22

“King stressed the importance of connecting with people like school alumni and professors to help with job searching. He explained to us how networking works with the law of geometric progression. At the end of the day, people know other people, who also know other people. In doing this, you will have connections to many others in the workforce and continue to grow your own network.” Kate Sollers ’22

“I also was blessed to have Liza Schaef sitting at my table and it was great to connect with her. Liza provided me with a lot of information and ways her office can help me in the next few months when looking for a job. Liza and I now have a meeting to review my resume and to go over how to apply for jobs. She is great and a connection/resource that will be very helpful to me in the future.” Logan Long ’22
